When Crores Are Spent but Standards Are Missed: The Silent Gap in Indian Sports Infrastructure Tendering/Procurement
India spends hundreds of crores every year on sports infrastructure. But how often do we stop to ask—are these facilities actually built to sport-specific standards? This article highlights a critical gap between tender specifications, technical standards, and on-ground reality in sports infrastructure development. While India has a dedicated Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, there is currently no formal education or structured curriculum within Engineering or Architecture programs that addresses the technical, engineering, and performance aspects of sports infrastructure. At the same time, Central and State Governments invest hundreds of crores of rupees every financial year in developing new sports academies and refurbishing existing facilities. However, due to the absence of domain-specific technical knowledge, standardized specifications, and informed oversight, it often remains uncertain whether these facilities truly comply with sport-specific national and international standards. This gap highlights the urgent need for specialized education, clear technical guidelines, and informed evaluation mechanisms, so that public investments translate into safe, high-performance, and regulation-compliant sports infrastructure. Unfortunately, the lack of technical understanding among those responsible for floating tenders often becomes a boon for suppliers focused on higher margins, while simultaneously becoming a curse for players, who are deprived of standard, safe, and performance-oriented infrastructure. A sincere advisory: If you are responsible for tendering, procurement, or decision-making related to sports infrastructure, it is strongly advised not to rely solely on contractor quotations or supplier claims for technical specifications. Instead, verify every requirement against the prescribed standards of the respective sports authority. After all, the Government or your organization entrusts you with public funds, and players trust the system to provide them with safe, standard, and performance-compliant infrastructure.
